Key points for consideration

  • Alignment significance: The feasibility of bridge designs is intricately tied to the chosen alignment of the new bridge. Each alignment concept will carry substantial implications, and guidance from mana whenua is of utmost importance.
  • Land acquisition:  Alignments may require land acquisition as part of the project.
  • Project timeline: The goal is to begin construction on a permanent replacement structure to the community by mid-to late 2028.

Works completed to date

A feasibility study is being conducted to assess and the engineering challenges linked to each potential bridge crossing locations. The study aims to propose bridge concepts that are achievable from an engineering standpoint. The feasibility report is based on the following:

  • Geometrics
  • Hydrology and climate effects
  • Geotechnical/geology considerations
  • Environmental considerations
  • Constructability
  • Cost
  • Social impacts
  • Other factors
