Trees are critically important to our environment and much appreciated by residents.
Council recognises the importance of trees in the environment and protects notable trees in the District Plan.
These trees are valued because of their historic importance, scientific interest and/or botanical rarity, importance of position in the landscape, size, age, form and condition, or functional value. They contribute to a quality environment and assist in creating a sense of place. Having notable trees protected in the District Plan ensures that these are maintained to a safe and healthy standard for future generations.
Trees have been assessed against the STEM (Standard Tree Evaluation Method) to determine the condition of the tree, its amenity value and the notable value of the tree or group of trees. A STEM assessment is undertaken by an arborist and helps inform the level of protection in the District Plan.
Trees of outstanding heritage value have been listed on the Notable Trees Registration Scheme co-ordinated by the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture.
For the complete list of Heritage Trees see the Outstanding Trees (appendix 52) and Significant Trees (appendix 53) sections of the Hastings District Plan. Some protected trees are located on private land and others within public spaces.
If you want to do anything to a listed tree including pruning, or any excavation or construction work near a notable tree, please contact a Council consents planner to discuss the proposed work well ahead of time.
