A number of events are organised annually on behalf of Hastings District Council that honour or reward members of the community or commemorate particular events that have helped shape the society that we live in. These events are instrumental in building pride in the city and also help to bring our diverse communities and ethnic groups together and come under the banner of Civic Events.
Every year on February 3, Hastings commemorates the anniversary of the 1931 Hawke's Bay Earthquake. A special ceremony open to the general public is held at the Hastings City Centre Mall to remember the day that changed lives in Hastings and wider Hawke's Bay, and to celebrate the city and community around us. Stories of how the event reshaped Hastings are told and wreaths are laid at the clock tower in memory of the lives lost in the earthquake.
The Lighting of Osmanthus Gardens lantern festival takes place at Cornwall Park, Hastings in April every year. In 2019 new lotus lanterns were added to display, and classical music added to the magic. The coloured traditional Chinese lanterns are the stars of the light show along with magnificent live performances from musicians dressed in traditional costume.
Each year Hastings District Council recognises the voluntary service of individuals or groups/organisations through the Civic Honour Awards. So many people in the Hastings District have devoted their time and energy in to making a difference in our communities; victim support volunteers, sports coaches, art enthusiasts; the list is endless.
