Wastewater Pipeline Relining Whakatū

As part of Hastings District Council’s ongoing commitment to water, work is currently underway to reline one of the big wastewater pipelines at Whakatū which takes wastewater from Hastings out to the wastewater treatment plant. This is to ensure the continued resilience of the wastewater network in the Hastings District.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: This project has been deemed as essential and from 21 August 2021 the contractors, Interflow Ltd, will continue to operate through level 4 and subsequent COVID-19 alert levels, based on the reasons outlined below:

  • The main sewer is a critical asset that conveys all of Hastings wastewater to East Clive.
  • The current worksite is operating on a bypass system that enables wastewater to be redirected. However, there is insufficient capacity to cater for a larger rain event which could lead to an overflow of the wastewater network.
  • The work has been programmed at this time of year when our major food processing industry are not at peak production. If not completed in this current critical window, work will need to be delayed until this time next year which will put pressure on the current infrastructure.

We are asking Whakatū residents to please avoid the area marked below whilst lockdown measures are in place. It is critical for the safety of both the public and the contractors that social distancing is maintained.

HDC Wastewater WhakatuPipe MAPThere are strict Health and Safety measures in place, as well as fencing and signage, however, we ask that you please avoid this stretch of road during your daily exercise.

Please note, that the team of ten Interflow Ltd. contractors will be living and working together as a single bubble.

Completion date: Work is due for completion by 10 September 2021. Work will only be undertaken between the hours of 7.00am and 5.00pm, Monday to Saturday.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • There will be no loss of wastewater services. Trenchless technology will be used which only requires access to existing manholes.
  • The only disruption to local residents will be traffic delays at times.
  • The work will be completed in three stages: cleaning and preparation, renewal of the pipelines and finishing works.
  • Trucks and specialised equipment used for the pipeline renewal will be on site throughout the duration of the works, this will include 2.5m diameter drums that will placed along the route
  • At times, the footpath on one side of the road will be closed and parking on the shoulder will be limited.
  • If there is traffic management in place that directly affects your property, we will ensure you are notified prior to the works.
