It’s estimated that New Zealanders throw out about 295 million single-use cups each year, which equates to about four million in the Hastings district alone. In addition, these standard single-use coffee cups have a thin layer of plastic coating. Therefore, they can’t be recycled, and compostable versions are causing issues at local composter BioRich.
Using the Again Again cup, a reusable stainless steel cup, is a simple yet effective way to tackle this problem.
You pay a $3 deposit to borrow the cup from one of the cafés that’s part of the Again Again network. You can keep and reuse it, or swap it with a clean one in one of the participating cafés, or get a refund when you bring it back.
You can also borrow more than one cup, and bring all of them back at the same time when you remember. Easy!
In Hastings we are now up to 16 cafés (and counting) using the scheme which is brilliant news!
