The Animal Control team promotes good care and control of dogs by providing public education to school and community groups, responding to dog control complaints, maintaining Council's impounding facilities, and enforcing the Dog Control Act and Hastings District Council's Consolidated Bylaw (chapter three).
Animal Control's main impounding facility is its Animal Welfare Centre, in Stevens Pl, Flaxmere.
Animal Control centre hours
- Monday to Friday: 9am to 10am and 3pm to 4pm
- Saturday: 9am to 10am
- Sundays and public holidays: Closed
Animal Control staff are also charged with responding to reports of straying and trespassing stock, including cattle, sheep, horses, goats and donkeys etc. Where stock is found straying they are generally impounded if the owner cannot be immediately be contacted. The stock is advertised and if the owner does not claim the animals, they are publicly auctioned.
Day time response to animal-related complaints
Animal Control officers work from 8am to 5pm responding to complaints regarding animal behaviour (for example: roaming and barking dogs, dog attacks, stock on roads).
After hours response to animal-related complaints
Animal Control responds to emergency calls regarding stock on roads, dog attacks and roaming dogs after hours, from 5pm to 8am.
