Local ElectionsNgā Pōtinga ā-Rohe

The next local body election period will be 9 September - 11 October 2025. To vote, you need to be on the New Zealand electoral roll and live in the Hastings District permanently - or own property here. You also need to be 18 years or older, and be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.

Local elections 2025

Our local elections are held every three years and give you the chance to vote for the Mayor and local council.

The next local election will be held on 11 October 2025. Alongside the election, Hasting District Council must also run a poll on the future of the Takitimu Māori Ward. The majority vote of the poll will decide its future:

  • If the poll result favours keeping Māori wards, there will be an electoral contest for them at the local elections in 2028 and 2031.
  • If the poll result favours abolishing Māori wards, there will not be an electoral contest for them in 2028.

If you are an enrolled voter, you'll get a voting information pack in the mail.
