Bridge Information | Hastings District Council

Many bridges across the district were damaged during Cyclone Gabrielle, and numerous roads impacted with flooding and slips, particularly in rural areas. Information on bridge and road closures can be found on our Road Works page.

Temporary bridges

Below is a breakdown of short term solutions currently in place for those bridges lost during Cyclone Gabrielle.

Bailey bridges	Access established	Notes/loading
Rissington	31 March, 2023	Class 1 / General Access traffic loading 50 MAX 10kmh Vehicles need to reduce speed. One truck at a time.
Ellis Wallace	11 August, 2023	Class 1 / General Access traffic loading. 50MAX, one truck at a time. All vehicles reduce speed to 30km/hr.
Moeangiangi	13 June, 2023	Class 1 / General Access traffic loading. 50T MAX, One truck at a time. All vehicles reduce speed to 30km/hr.
Mangatutu	15 June, 2023	Class 1 / General Access traffic loading. 50T MAX with one truck at a time. All vehicles reduce speed to 30km/hr.
Whanawhana	15 May, 2023	Class 1 / General Access traffic loading. 50T MAX, one truck at a time. All vehicles 30km/hr max.
Follies	13 July, 2023	Class 1 / General Access traffic loading. 50T MAX, one truck at a time. All vehicles reduce speed to 10km/hr.
Temporary crossings	Access established	Notes/loading
Matapiro	10 August, 2023	Options being confirmed for the permanent structure.
McVicars Culvert		Permanent solution initiated for resilience.
Temporary staging	Access established	Notes/loading
Dartmoor (Mangaone)	5 April, 2023	40t MAX at 10km/hr. One truck at a time.
Redclyffe (Waiohiki)	8 August, 2023	8t MAX at 30km/hr.
Other restricted bridges		Notes/loading
Waikoau Gorge Bridge		11T vehicles at 50km/hr. Load restriction: Vehicles up to 30T max with 5.5 max axle loading at 10km/hr by permit only. To apply for a permit email ambs@hdc.govt.nz

Note: There are currently no crossings in place for Puketapu, Brookfields, Darkeys Spur No.1 and Kererū Gorge. At Aropaoanui, the existing Arapawanui bridge is still in place but the approach has only been temporarily reinstated while we look for a permanent solution. At Crownthorpe, repairs to the approach are underway.
