Reserves for Overnight Parking and Facilities

Visitors are welcome to park overnight for a maximum of two nights per month, at any single location on the conditions below, where current self-contained warranted vehicles are permitted. (see the map below)

Conditions of Overnight Parking on Designated Council Reserves

  • Under NZS5465:2001 certified self-containment motor caravan/caravan warrant is displayed and current, affixed to the inside left of the front window or the inside left of the windshield, with the warrant details facing outward
  • Maximum stay: 2 nights per month per site
  • All refuse must be taken away and/or disposed of at an approved transfer station and shall not be left in or beside rubbish bins provided on site for small rubbish items
  • Discharge black water (sewage) and grey water (sink, hand basin and shower water) at designated dump stations only
  • Do not light any fires
  • Dogs on leads at all times
  • Be considerate of others:
  • Generator use: maximum 2 hours, between 8am and 8pm only.
  • Parking on-site: A 3 meter gap kept between vehicles, park tow vehicles at a 90 degree angle in front of the motor caravan/caravan, avoid parking parallel to the beach/river view

These reserves are monitored daily by a local security firm and breach of the rules may result being issued with a trespass notice. All overnight campers are asked to comply with a request to move on, by an Officer of the Council.

Designated Self Containment Reserves

The designated self-containment reserves in the Hastings District permit overnight parking for a maximum of two nights per month, at any single location on the conditions above, where current self-contained warranted vehicles are permitted.

  • Evers-Swindell Reserve, Clive
  • Clifton Road Reserve, Clifton Road, Te Awanga
  • Haumoana Domain, Domain Road, Haumoana
  • Pakowhai Country Park, Pakowhai Road, Hastings
  • Puketapu Domain, Dartmoor Road, Puketapu
  • Dartmoor Bridge Reserve, Puketapu

These reserves are monitored daily by a local security firm and unauthorised campers may be issued with trespass notices.

Evers-Swindell Reserve

This reserve is on the shores of the Clive River, between Napier and Hastings. Overnight parking at Evers-Swindell Reserve is only permitted on Hastings District Council land under the trees. No overnight camping is permitted on the Hawke's Bay Regional Council sealed car park that is located beyond the boat ramp, at the far end of the reserve. That prohibited area is clearly signposted. Please note: This area is subject to flooding during heavy rainfall or at very high tides.

Directions: From Hastings travel along SH2 towards Napier, turn off just before the Clive Bridge onto Ferry Rd. The reserve entrance is off Clive Tce, which is the first road on your left, off Ferry Rd.

Clifton Rd Reserve

Located on the beachfront, between the settlements of Haumoana and Te Awanga, Clifton Rd Reserve is the most popular and largest of the reserves provided by the Hastings District Council for overnight camping. Nearby attractions include wineries, home-based artists and the popular Gannet Beach Adventures tours to the Cape Kidnappers gannet colony.

Directions: From Clive, take Mill Rd and follow the signs to Te Awanga, and turn into East Rd. Follow East Rd to the coast and then turn right onto Clifton Rd. The reserve is about 450m along Clifton Rd.

Haumoana Domain

Haumoana Domain is beachfront reserve on the banks of the Tukituki River, on the coast between Napier and Hastings.

Toilets facilities.

Directions: From Clive, take Mill Rd and follow the signs to Haumoana. Follow Haumoana Rd for about 1 km, then turn left into Grange Rd and take the first right into Domain Rd. The reserve is on the beachfront, 300m along Domain Rd.

Pakowhai Country Park

This site is located off Pakowhai Rd in a picturesque rural setting, about 3km north of Hastings. It is a popular destination for day walks and is also a designated off-lead dog exercise area. Note: The car park is owned by Hastings District Council but the reserve is owned by Hawke's Bay Regional Council (HBRC). Overnight camping is prohibited on regional council land.

No toilet facilities.

Directions: From Hastings follow Pakowhai Rd towards Napier for approximately 3km. The reserve entrance is on your left, just past the intersection with Ruahapia Rd.

Puketapu Domain

This reserve sits alongside the Tutaekuri River, west of Napier, and is a short drive from the Puketapu store, hotel and school on Dartmoor Road, Puketapu. It features a cricket pitch, toilets and barbecue facilities.

Overnight self contained parking only – Closed: end of daylight savings (Autumn).  Open: start of daylight savings (Spring).

Directions:

From Taradale, follow Puketapu Rd for approximately 7km until you reach the settlement of Puketapu. Turn left at the Puketapu Hotel, onto Dartmoor Rd. The entrance to the reserve is approximately 1km along this road on your left.

Dartmoor Bridge Reserve

This reserve is located alongside the river, near several popular wineries in the Dartmoor Valley on Dartmoor Road, Puketapu.

No toilet facilities.

Directions: From Taradale follow Puketapu Rd for approximately 7km until you reach the settlement of Puketapu. Turn left at the Puketapu Hotel, onto Dartmoor Rd. The entrance to the reserve is 10 km along this road, on your left.

Motor caravan dump stations

Dump stations are located at Napier Road in Havelock North and Kenilworth Road in Hastings.
