The construction of a major new water main between Hastings and Havelock North was completed in 2019.
It is a key element of Hastings District Council’s comprehensive water infrastructure upgrade plan: the Hastings Drinking Water Strategy, designed to improve reliance, capacity and flexibility into the water supply network
The $10 million project has seen the pipe laid over 4.8 kilometres, from Sylvan Road in Hastings to Napier Rd in Havelock North, via St Aubyn St, Windsor Ave, Howard St, St George’s Rd and Crosses Rd.
At the Havelock North end a booster pump is now being installed (November 2019).
The installation of the water main allowed work on two further projects to be carried out at the same time, because of their proximity to the water pipe: an upgrade of the wastewater system in the St Aubyn St area, to increase capacity, and a shared cycle/walkway along St George’s Rd. The latter is a key link in the district’s cycleway plan and will be jointly-funded by Hastings District Council and the NZ Transport Agency.
Further network upgrades will occur over time to strengthen the resilience and capacity of the network.
