What is a transfer station?

A transfer station is a place that accepts and treats waste before it is taken to a landfill or recycling facility. The public and waste collection businesses can bring waste items not suitable for kerbside collection to transfer stations.

There are two transfer stations in Hastings district; Henderson Road Transfer Station (Flaxmere) and Blackbridge Transfer Station (Haumoana).

What can I take to a transfer station?

Fees apply to dispose of:

  • Green waste (Garden waste and lawn clippings)
  • Household waste
  • Building waste - including timber, window glass, clean PVC pipe offcuts and large plastic containers (#2 & #5 plastics) (Reduced rate available at Henderson Road Transfer Station only)
  • Commercial volumes of cardboard and plastic containers (#2 & #5 plastics)
  • Fridges and freezers
  • Electronic recycling (Henderson Road Transfer Station only - see fees here

Items free of charge:

  • Recycling - Paper & cardboard, glass, plastic (types 1, 2 & 5) & cans
    (Household only, not commercial business)
Sort your recycling into the green shipping containers
  • Gas bottles
  • Scrap metal (Henderson Road Transfer Station only)
  • Washing machines, dryers, ovens, microwaves
  • Household and car batteries
  • Waste oil - free up to 20L, 20c per litre thereafter (Henderson Road Transfer Station only)
  • Quality second hand items (Henderson Road Transfer Station only)

Got lots of garden waste?

Both of our transfer stations accept garden waste (also called green waste). Garden waste needs to be kept separate from other waste, so it can be composted. The cost of getting rid of garden waste at a transfer station is cheaper than general rubbish.

There is also a commercial company that accepts residential green waste in Awatoto, Napier. For the details, see their website: BioRich.
