Te Mata Rd water project back underway

Work to finish laying the new water main along Te Mata Rd has resumed, following the Christmas and New Year break.

The contractor has advised Hastings District Council that the laying of the new pipe will be completed by mid-April. The installation of a new sewer pipe, being carried out at the same time, will also be completed by that date.

Unexpected ground conditions and the siting of some historic infrastructure were among issues that had seen the finish date of the project being pushed out. There was also a delay in starting the work as key resources were being used to complete a new trunk water main in Heretaunga St West.

“This is a very important piece of water supply infrastructure that helps us fulfil our aim of increasing the resilience and capacity of our supply,” said Council’s works and services committee chairman Kevin Watkins.

“It is disappointing that the completion date has had to be pushed out and we thank everyone for their continued patience.

“It is a possibility with this type of work that we will find ground conditions that create complications.”

Mr Watkins said Council is continuing to work closely with the contractor to ensure the project is completed as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Residents living alongside the works are being individually advised of progress, with the wider public informed vie traditional and social media.

Sections of St Hill Lane will be closed to traffic (except to residents, their visitors, and service vehicles) in sections while work is completed.

Parts of Te Mata Rd will be reduced to a single lane using traffic signals or stop/go controls for periods during the day. Temporary traffic and pedestrian management will continue for the remainder of the project, to ensure the safety of all road users. Some delays are to be expected and road users are advised to use an alternative route where possible.
