Whakatu Arterial Link Update - 6 January 2017

Work on the Whakatu Arterial Link road, connecting State Highway 2 (SH2) with Pakowhai Rd, is about to start.

As well as making transport of our district’s beautiful fresh produce easier, the finished road will take heavy trucks off the residential streets of Whakatu, making them safer for families.

The project has been five years in the making and those most closely affected (residents, business owners, land owners and iwi) have been involved over that period, leading to a route design agreed to by the parties.

Now, with route clearing and fencing work completed, it is time for the diggers to start making an appearance. The company undertaking the work for Hastings District Council, Higgins, is planning on starting at the SH2 end, near the Napier Rd turnoff, building one of the three large roundabouts.

First on site will be Unison from about January 9, putting in the ground works for roundabout lighting and undergrounding the overhead wires. The, from late January, Higgins will start on the building of the roundabout and associated connections. The next part of the work will include the brining in of clean fill and residents on Station Rd will notice increased numbers of trucks on their road for about four months. Council will keep these people specifically updated as this work progresses.

There may be a period of time when there is a diversion around the Napier Rd/SH2 area, however that will be advised to the public well in advance.

The work at that end of the project is timed to take about five months, after which the road will be built across the country towards Pakowhai Rd, finishing at the entrance to the Pakowhai Country Park.

The Whakatu Arterial Link is considered a strategic link of the highest priority in the region. The three kilometre route includes three large roundabouts, one at each end and one in the industrial area of Whakatu, and a bridge over the Karamu Stream, at the Pakowhai Rd end.

It is expected that the road will be completed late 2018/early 2019.

Council has an email contact list which will be used to directly advise those most closely affected. People who wish to be included on that list should email

People who have concerns or questions during the project can contact Higgins Ltd on 06 835 7288 or Hastings District Council on 06 871 5000.
