Hazmobile collection planned for next year

hazardous waste storageThe annual Hazmobile collection has been delayed this year and residents are being reminded to store their hazardous materials safely, or use alternative options if they are wanting to dispose of them sooner.

Hazmobile events are usually held around November in Hastings and Napier, but the annual hazardous waste collection has had to be postponed this year.

It is planned to stage the event in the New Year (prior to July), with the exact date to be confirmed closer to the time.

In the meantime, there are other options to safely get rid of your hazardous waste.

In Hastings, the Henderson Rd Recycling Depot takes household quantities of waste engine oil, gas bottles and cylinders, batteries (household, rechargeable and car batteries) and fluorescent light tubes and compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).

Used paint can be taken to Resene, although a fee may apply if the product is not a Resene paint.

In Napier, the Redclyffe transfer station accepts household quantities of waste engine oil, gas bottles and cylinders, batteries (household, rechargeable and car batteries) and paint. The general waste charge applies to waste oil and paint.

If residents are wanting to dispose of chemicals sooner, a user pays service is available via Chem Collect - go to https://3r.co.nz/ChemCollect/

For people who have hazardous materials at home Hastings District and Napier City councils advise that they should make sure they are stored safely and securely:

  • Keep hazardous materials dry and away from heat or flames;
  • Always keep things in their original container so the contents are clearly labelled;
  • If the container is leaking and you have to use another, label it correctly;
  • Keep lids tightly closed;
  • Always keep hazardous materials out of the reach of children - for example in a locked cupboard.
