Kapa haka on Waitangi Day

The Waitangi Day, The ‘Big 9’ event, with sports, arts, food and music, is on this Saturday – and it is going to be huge.

The event, one of the biggest Waitangi Day celebrations in New Zealand, is hosted by Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi at the Hawke’s Bay Sports Park in Hastings.

Adding to the excitement, Ngāti Kahungunu’s regional kapa haka competitions will be a major component this year. It has attracted the biggest number of entries in the history of the event, so organisers have planned the competition for two days, starting on Friday, February 5. The finalists will compete at Te Matatini, the biggest kapa haka festival in the world, being held in Hawke’s Bay in 2017.

This year The Big 9 commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between Ngāti Kahungunu chiefs and the crown on June 24, 1840.

“We invite the whole community to come along,” said iwi chairman Ngāhiwi Tomoana. “The day is about family, community and nationhood”.

Waitangi Day celebrations will open with a powhiri at 11am.

The free family-friendly, smoke- and alcohol-free, zero waste party is for all ages with food and market stalls, health expo, kids’ rides, sports and a multicultural concert.

Twenty food stalls at Bite of the Bay will be cooking up tasty street snacks and delicacies from around the world: hangi, kebabs, paella, whitebait fritters, steamed mussels, fried bread, churro, sushi, ice cream and watermelon, shaved ice and more.

Last year’s event attracted 15,000 people and the organisers are expecting similar numbers this year.

Last year organisers started a zero waste programme and managed to divert 40% of waste away from the landfill. This year they want to improve on that figure. “Our target is zero waste of course,” said Tyne Nelsom event waste manager. “We made a good start last year and I am committed to reducing further waste going to the landfill.”

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi has provided most of the funding for the event with support from Hastings District Council, Te Puni Kokiri, Eastern and Central Community Trust and Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga.
