Facelift for starring art work

It is only to be expected, that at nearly 60 years of age, a starring piece of art work in our Hastings War Memorial Library needs a checkup (and possibly a touch up) every now and again.

The famous war mural in the Hall of Memories at the library is to undergo preventive conservation treatment starting Sunday, February 14.

“Conservation treatment is scheduled regularly to ensure the integrity and long term preservation of this irreplaceable artwork,” says deputy mayor Cynthia Bowers.

Professional conservator Carolina Izzo has been commissioned to assess the condition of the nearly 60-year-old mural, and undertake any repair work.

Ms Bowers says treatment may include cleaning of the overall paint surface along with retouching and repairs to areas where colour loss has occurred.

"The Hall of Memories entrance to the library will remain open to the public during the conservation work as the scaffolding can be erected and removed outside business hours”.

Library users will be able to watch the conservator at work in the Hall of Memories.

The mural, painted in 1959 and listed as a public artwork, was designed and painted by war artist Peter McIntyre. The mural depicts an assault by the joint branches of the armed forces on an unspecified beach.
