Three icons up on the walls

The third of Hastings eight ‘Icons’ went up today – this time an apple tree.

That came after portraits of Hastings-born painter Rita Angus and Hastings old boy Dick Frizzell were put up over the last two weeks.

Hastings Icons celebrates the people and things which have helped make Hastings the place it is today. Each of the art works, all by Adrian Thornton, is accompanied by a written explanation and a QR-code which people can scan to find out more information.

The apple tree has a huge history in Hastings and wider Hawke’s Bay, dating from when the first orchard was planted by James Nelson Williams. Today 6300 hectares are committed to growing what are one of the region’s biggest earners. Nowadays the Bay’s apples are exported across the world. The art work is in Russell St, opposite Café at Westermans.

Rita Angus’s portrait went up on the wall of Ya Bon French Baker in Warren St last week. The noted New Zealand painter completed a four-year diploma in fine arts and went on to work and live across New Zealand, including in Napier.

Dick Frizzell, who describes himself as “an old boy of Hawke’s Bay” is a noted contemporary artist and graphic designer. His likeness is on the side wall of the Humanities Building, in Karamu Rd.
