Whakatu Arterial Link Update - 13 March 2017

Again heavy rain over the weekend has interrupted work, however at this early stage it is not expected to impact on the timeframes of the overall project.

We do ask that everyone takes extra care at the State Highway 2 end of the project after changes to the road layout are put in place from tomorrow, narrowing the available roadway through there. Preparatory construction of three-quarters of the new roundabout has been completed, however to do the last “fillet” the work needs to move into the traffic zone. The existing white road markings will be blacked over, and new markings put into place.

The configuration of the small temporary roundabout has changed after input from NZTA suggested dropping the height of it so drivers can better see the indicator lights on other vehicles. This roundabout continues to work well.

Also in that area, work on the layers that provide the foundation for the new roads into the roundabout continues.

Pilcher Road, just off State Highway, will be a 30kmh area between SH2 and Lawn Road for the next week as surveyors will be working in the area.

At the Whakatu site a short section of new roadway is under construction and the team continues to work on excavations and layer works.

As those involved in the process around finding artefacts during excavation will know, historic hangi stones were found in the vicinity of Karamu Stream. The protocols in place mean these will be handed to iwi for preservation.
