Mai Manu bombing competition to find Hastings’ Manu Master

water bomb

The call is out for the Hastings Manu Bomb Master, with an upcoming competition a chance for someone to take out the title as the Hastings Manu King or Queen.

The manu is a popular dive bomb but it’s not always safe or practical at public pool facilities – it needs a pool that’s deep enough, and enough space to avoid accidents with other swimmers.

So Hastings District Council and Mai FM got together to put on the Mai Manu bombing competition – an opportunity for manu enthusiasts to show off their talents.

Former Flaxmere councillor Peleti Oli is a long-time manu enthusiast and will be one of the judges of the competition taking place at Havelock North Village Pool, on Sunday, November 27.

He said he will be keeping a close eye on technique in the search for a local superstar.

“We will be looking at their entry into the water, we want to see them super tucked in and for there to be a big splash.

“The manu is a chance to express yourself and add your natural flair – I’m sure that by the end of the day we will have found the perfect manu right here in Hawke’s Bay.”

The competition is open to anyone over the age of eight-years-old, with three age categories to enter: Junior (8 to 13 years), Senior (14-17 years), and Master (18+ years).

“People can enter the competition, but they can also just come along to enjoy the day and watch the action.”

There will be prizes up for grabs for the competitors from Stirling Sports, Hustle Surf & Moto, Sunday’s Drink and lots more, but the action won’t just be in the pool.

There will be all-day family entertainment including a kids’ splash zone, food trucks and the Te Waka Tākaro Play Trailer full of games and activities.

The pool will be open from 10am to 6pm and the competition will start at 11am.

Anyone keen to enter the competition can go to www.aquaticshastings.co.nz to register.
